Red Kite roosts - Christmas survey results

They had declined to a very small population in mid-Wales - approx 20 pairs. Since then a combination of a slow natural recovery and a major reintroduction programme has had remarkable results.
In winter they gather in big flocks to roost - over Christmas I was part of doing a  HOS-organised survey of such roost sites in the Hampshire/Surrey border area - think Basingstoke to Guildford. We found a total of 320 birds in 6 roosts - with 120 together at one site. Amazing sight.
Their main food is carrion - dead stuff - such as road-kill. So while they are regular over my Alton garden, we are not particularly concerned about any risk to my daughter's bunnies.
This bird was low over Chawton during the snow - so fairly well lit from below.
